How to get the most out of it
Sit the reading and writing papers on the official timing, then check your raw score against the level table in the answer key.
Watch for the classic traps for French speakers: prepositions, verb tenses with since and for, and false friends.
Answer the oral questions out loud in English and record yourself. Level C means sustained, structured answers on abstract topics.
Retake the same paper only after a gap: the real SLE makes you wait 30 days between attempts at the same test.

Why are the instructions in French?
The booklet is written for francophone public servants who take the SLE in English, so the instructions, the answer key and the level tables are in French while every question is in English.
What is on the SLE English reading and writing tests?
Both are multiple choice. The supervised reading test has 60 questions in 90 minutes on short workplace texts. The supervised written expression test has 65 questions in 90 minutes: fill in the blank and find the error. There is no essay.
What level do I need?
It depends on the position. A linguistic profile such as BBB means level B in reading, writing and oral. Many supervisory positions ask for CBC, which means C in reading, B in writing and C in oral.
