How booking a TEF Canada sitting works

Mocko does not sell exam seats. Here is what to get right before you pay.

1

Pick the right version of the test

TEF Canada is the version IRCC accepts for permanent residence and citizenship. TEFAQ (TEF Québec) is for Québec immigration programs. They are booked separately, and a TEFAQ result is not interchangeable with TEF Canada.

2

Book directly with the centre

Centres set their own calendars and take their own registrations. Almost all of them register candidates online only — very few accept a booking by phone or at reception.

3

Watch the release date, not just the exam date

Busy centres publish a new month of sittings on a fixed day and fill within minutes. If a centre near you shows nothing, it usually means the next batch has not opened yet rather than that it has stopped testing.

4

Sit all four skills on the same day

For a TEF Canada result to be recognised by Canadian authorities, reading, listening, writing and speaking must be completed in one sitting.

What it costs

Centres set their own prices, so the fee varies. Across Canada the full four-skill TEF Canada usually runs around $390 CAD; a few centres price each module separately, which is worth knowing if you only need to retake one skill.

On the day

  • Bring the same photo ID you registered with — usually a passport, permanent resident card, or another government-issued ID the centre accepted at booking.
  • Arrive early. Centres routinely refuse entry once a session has started, and the fee is not refunded.
  • Phones, watches and bags go into storage before you enter the room.
  • Results are typically emailed one to four weeks after the sitting, depending on the centre.
  • A TEF result is valid for two years from the date you sat it.

TEF test centre questions, answered

How many TEF Canada test centres are there in Canada?

There are 94 accredited TEF locations across 11 provinces and territories. Quebec has by far the most, followed by Ontario. Several organisations — Alliance Française, Collège Boréal, Cégep de Valleyfield and Collège Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière among them — run more than one site under a single accreditation.

Which TEF Canada centre should I choose?

Any accredited centre produces the same, equally valid result, so choose on practicality: how soon a seat is free, how far you have to travel, and whether the centre offers the exact version of the test you need. Big-city centres run more sittings but sell out faster; smaller regional centres often have space when Montréal and Toronto do not.

Can I register for the TEF at the test centre in person?

Rarely. Most Canadian centres take registrations online only and explicitly say they cannot book you in by phone or at reception. Use the booking link on the centre page, or the centre’s own registration page where it has one.

What is the difference between TEF Canada and TEFAQ?

TEF Canada is the four-skill version accepted by IRCC for permanent residence and citizenship. TEFAQ (also written TEF Québec) is used for Québec immigration programs and is commonly taken as speaking and listening only. Most Canadian centres are accredited for both, but you book them as separate exams.

How much does the TEF Canada cost?

Centres set their own fees. Across Canada the full four-skill TEF Canada is typically about $390 CAD. A handful of centres, including McGill, charge per module instead, which can be cheaper if you only need to resit one skill.

How long are TEF results valid?

Two years from the date you sat the test. IRCC will not accept a result older than that at the time your application is submitted, so plan your sitting around when you expect to apply.

How soon can I retake the TEF?

The accrediting body requires a gap between two sittings of the same test — commonly quoted as 20 to 60 days depending on the centre and the version. Check with your centre before booking a resit, because a booking made too soon can be cancelled.
