The best CELPIP books, honestly ranked

Christien Lee has written test-prep books since the nineties, including TOEFL and IELTS titles, and it shows: this is the rare CELPIP book with professional editing and a coherent method. It covers all eight speaking tasks with 48 topics and 40 model responses, and it has quietly become the most-reviewed CELPIP book on Amazon.ca with the strongest sustained rating. The 2016 content is ageing, but the task formats it teaches still match the test.

The writing half of the Test Expert pair, with more than forty high-scoring model responses and step-by-step builds for both the email task and the survey task. Reviewers consistently call the practice material close to the real test, and Canadian public libraries stock it, which says something about its standing. As with its sibling, the main knock is age: nothing has been updated since 2016, and a vocal minority of reviewers dispute how achievable its score claims are.

One of only two prep textbooks ever written by Paragon, the company that makes the CELPIP, which means the question formats are the real thing by definition. It is also out of print: Paragon moved all official prep to online products on celpip.ca, and the only new copy on Amazon.ca at the time of writing was listed at a scalper price above CAD $400. At a used-copy price it is well worth having; at scalper prices it absolutely is not.

Buyers also grumble that audio access was confusing even when it was current, an early sign of why Paragon went digital.

It is a methods-and-strategy book rather than a mock-test collection, which is the right expectation to bring. Reviewers praise the organisation and report real passes; they also report errors in the text, and the anonymous imprint means no author credentials to weigh.

From an established Canadian test-prep publisher also stocked at Indigo and Walmart, this is one of the few CELPIP books with two full practice tests and downloadable audio for listening, the section almost every competitor ignores. The May 2025 edition also fixed the old edition's worst problem, a fifty-dollar price for 162 pages. The recurring criticism to know about: a minority of reviewers find the questions drift from the real CELPIP format.

Five hundred words with over fifteen hundred CELPIP-context examples and synonyms, at a substantial 249 pages. Vocabulary is where writing and speaking scores plateau between CLB 8 and 10, and this is the best-selling book that attacks the problem in CELPIP contexts specifically rather than as a generic ESL word list. Reviewers flag repetition among entries, and the list is the author's own curation, not derived from official test corpora.

Mad English TV is one of the most-watched CELPIP channels on YouTube, and this short ebook packages its natural-language-over-magic-words writing approach for ten dollars. The star average is the highest of any CELPIP writing ebook, though from a tiny review base, partly because the material circulates widely as pirated PDFs. A speaking companion exists only as a PDF sold on the author's own site.

A 2025 all-in-one that at least addresses the listening-audio gap most self-published guides ignore, with a fast-growing review base. Read those reviews before buying: five-star raves sit next to blunt warnings that it is not worth the money, and the pattern of many brief five-star reviews on a young title is one we treat with caution. At 116 pages for four sections, the depth is limited whatever the stars say.

At 254 pages with two complete practice tests, scoring rubrics and sample writing and speaking responses, this is more substantial than most of the 2025 self-published wave, and it includes sensible computer-based test-taking tips. Early reviewers have been lukewarm rather than won over, the listening sections ship without audio, and the author's credentials are unverifiable, which together keep it mid-table.

A budget bundle of roughly 35 writing and 75 speaking questions that sells steadily on price, with a 2023 Kindle spin-off adding twenty recent exam-style writing questions. The headline rating hides unusually harsh written reviews about unprofessional writing and sample answers below the standard the cover promises. If the budget allows even ten dollars more, the Test Expert books are a different tier.

We include this one as a marker for the bottom of the market. The written reviews are brutal, calling it useless and wishing for a zero-star option, the content is a generic word list with no CELPIP application, and the publisher has effectively abandoned it. Plenty of lookalike titles share this profile; the pattern to spot is a generic list, an anonymous imprint and no CELPIP-specific tasks.
