CELPIP re-evaluation: how it works and when it is worth the fee
One CELPIP level can decide an Express Entry invitation, and Writing and Speaking are marked by human raters. This guide covers the official re-evaluation procedure, the real cost after the refund rule, the timeline, and an honest look at how often a re-rating actually changes a score.
The short answer
A CELPIP re-evaluation is a paid re-rating of your test responses by CELPIP's certified raters. You request it from your CELPIP account within six months of the test, pay a fee of about CAD $55 plus tax per section, and get the outcome in roughly one to two weeks. If a level goes up, that section's fee is refunded and you receive an updated official score report. Reported outcomes are either an increase or no change, so the move makes sense in one specific situation: you are one level short of your target in Writing or Speaking and you have a genuine reason to believe you performed better than the result shows.

How to request a re-evaluation, step by step
The whole process is online and takes a few minutes. What matters is choosing the right sections before you pay, because the request cannot be changed afterwards.

Sign in to your CELPIP account
Re-evaluations are requested online only, from the same account you used to register at celpip.ca. There is no paper form and no email request.

Find the test sitting you want reviewed. The option is available for tests taken within the last six months.

You can technically submit any component, but Listening and Reading are computer scored, so Paragon itself notes those are unlikely to change. Put your money on the human rated sections.

How effective is a CELPIP re-evaluation really?
Paragon publishes no success statistics, so here is the most honest picture available from the official scoring process and from the outcomes test takers report publicly.
Writing and Speaking are judged by people, and people disagree
Each Speaking performance is rated by three to five raters and each Writing performance by four to six, working independently on four dimensions: content and coherence, vocabulary, listenability or readability, and task fulfillment. Your level is an aggregate of those judgements. When a performance sits on the boundary between two levels, a fresh set of eyes can legitimately land one level higher. That borderline zone is exactly where re-evaluations succeed.
Listening and Reading almost never change
Both sections are computer scored from your selected answers, and Paragon's own policy warns that re-evaluating them is unlikely to change anything. A re-evaluation there is checking arithmetic, not judgement. Spend the fee on the human rated sections or not at all.
What test takers actually report
Across Reddit threads and immigration forums, the reported outcomes cluster into two buckets: a one level increase in Writing or Speaking, or no change at all. Reports of scores dropping after a re-evaluation are essentially absent, which fits the refund policy that only contemplates increases. Increases show up most often when the disputed section was clearly out of line with the rest of the report, for example a Speaking 7 next to three abilities at 9 or above. Treat every individual story with caution, but the overall pattern is consistent: sensible requests on borderline performances succeed often enough that the refunded fee makes the expected cost very low.
When a re-evaluation makes sense, and when it does not
Request it when
- You are exactly one CELPIP level short of your target in Writing or Speaking, for example an 8 where you need CLB 9.
- The low section is an outlier. Your other three abilities came in clearly higher, or the result is well below what you scored on practice tests and previous sittings.
- You completed every task fully, spoke for the whole recording time, and hit the word counts in Writing.
- Your immigration timeline can absorb a two week wait, and you are still inside the six month window.
- The refund rule matters to you: if the level rises you pay nothing, so the true cost of a justified request is low.
Skip it when
- You need a jump of two or more levels. Publicly reported increases are almost always a single level.
- The weak section is Listening or Reading. Those are computer scored and effectively never change on review.
- You know the performance had real gaps: unfinished responses, off topic answers, or long silences in Speaking.
- Your score is far from the target across several abilities. Structured practice and a retake will move you further than a re-rating ever could.

What one extra CELPIP level is worth in CRS points
CELPIP levels map one to one onto Canadian Language Benchmarks, so CELPIP 9 in an ability simply is CLB 9. That makes the value of a successful re-evaluation easy to price for Express Entry.

Recent Express Entry cutoffs regularly come down to a handful of points, so one Writing or Speaking level can decide whether you receive an invitation.

Will IRCC accept a re-evaluated CELPIP score for Express Entry?
Yes. The re-evaluated result replaces the original as your official score, and the report remains valid for two years from your original test date. Update your Express Entry profile once the new report is available in your account.
Can I cancel a re-evaluation request after submitting it?

Who re-marks my test during a re-evaluation?
CELPIP raters are certified professionals with at least an undergraduate degree, recognised ESL or linguistics training, and native level or CLB 11 to 12 English. On the original marking, each Speaking performance is rated by three to five raters and each Writing performance by four to six, all working independently. A re-evaluation puts your responses in front of raters again for a fresh assessment.
Is it better to re-evaluate or retake CELPIP?
