The best TEF Canada books, honestly ranked

Published in January 2025, this is the one book from a major FLE publisher written explicitly for the nouvelles épreuves, the TEF format in force since December 2023. It trains all five sections with over 450 activities, ends with a complete exam simulation, and ships with a fully interactive online version that scores your answers and tracks progress. It also covers the TEF Canada and TEFAQ variants by name, so the tasks you practise match the test you will book.

Hachette produced this edition together with Le français des affaires, the CCI Paris body that actually writes the TEF, and the test maker lists it on its own site as preparation for the revised exam. You get progressive Je découvre, Je m'entraîne and Je m'évalue activity tiers for every section, one practice test per section, and self-assessment grids. One caveat: it went to print in April 2023, a few months before the December 2023 change, so a minority of the reading and listening drill types reflect the older item mix.

Not a TEF book, but the grammar reference that appears in virtually every serious TEF prep list, ours included. The lesson-left, exercises-right layout makes it genuinely usable for self-study, and because it teaches French rather than an exam format, the December 2023 reform did not age a single page. Work through the intermediate volume for NCLC 5 to 7 targets, then the avancé volume if you are chasing NCLC 8 and above.

Written by a Montréal-based former TEF examiner, this is the most developed writing guide in the strongest self-published TEF series on Amazon. It walks through both Section A and Section B tasks with more than 60 corrected sujets, four dissected model answers and a bank of 59 C1-level model essays. Because the December 2023 reform left expression écrite untouched, everything in it still applies to the current exam.

The reading section is where the December 2023 reform bit hardest, retiring the text-reordering and synonym exercises and introducing short authentic texts with gap-fills. This guide is one of the very few anywhere explicitly rebuilt for that new item mix, with strategy lessons and a complete new-format practice exam. The same academy publishes a listening course with eight new-format mock exams if compréhension orale is your weak point.

The vocabulary counterpart to the Grammaire progressive, organised by real-life themes such as work, housing, health and daily services. That thematic structure happens to line up well with the post-2023 TEF, which leans on authentic everyday texts and radio-style extracts. Like its grammar sibling, it is format-proof and pairs with a perfectionnement volume when you push toward NCLC 9 and above.

A pure topic bank from a coach with over a decade of DELF and TEF experience: 150 exam-style writing subjects covering both Section A news continuation tasks and Section B argumentation letters. Reviewers report real score gains and reuse it for TEFAQ, and since writing survived the reform unchanged, the material stays valid. The recurring complaint is that Section B topics come with hints rather than complete model answers.

The companion volume for expression orale, with 150 topics spanning Section A information-gathering calls and Section B persuasion role plays. Like the writing volume it is a topic bank rather than a course, so it works best as raw material for timed speaking practice with a partner, tutor, or an AI examiner. Speaking tasks were untouched by the 2023 reform, so the scenarios remain realistic.

A 30-day guided plan from the same former examiner behind the Réussir series: each day pairs a short lesson with an exercise and its correction. It answers the question most candidates actually ask, which is what to do each day, and it is the real product behind the "TEF in 30 days" phrase you see in search results. It was published in October 2023, straddling the format change, so treat its reading and listening drills as skill work and rely on official samples for exact item types.

The one book dedicated to the TEFAQ, the Québec immigration variant where the oral sections matter most. It trains all four skills with common-error warnings and a complete simulation, and is widely stocked by Québec booksellers. The 2019 edition predates the format reform, which matters less for TEFAQ candidates since the speaking and writing sections that Québec weighs most heavily were not changed.

For fifteen years this was the default TEF book, and its 250 drills still show up in every roundup. But the content is from 2003: it trains retired exercise types like text reordering and synonym matching, the audio CD is a separate purchase that has become genuinely hard to source, and it never covered writing or speaking. Useful today only as cheap supplementary comprehension volume, not as a plan.

The highest-rated TEF book ever published, with two complete mock tests and a grading scale, and plenty of reviewers who passed TEF Canada with it in earlier years. It is also from 2001, covers an exam structure two reforms out of date, and is out of print. Its DNA lives on in Hachette's 2023 Nouvelle édition above, which is the version to buy today.
