Inburgering Examen A2: Sample Questions with Answers
Table of Contents10 sections
The inburgering examen A2 has five separate parts: reading, listening, speaking, writing and KNM, and you pass each one on its own. Below are original sample questions for every part, with answers, model answers for speaking and writing, and how those two parts are rated. We wrote every sample ourselves; none is taken from DUO material.
In short: reading, listening, speaking and KNM are done on a computer at DUO. Writing is done with pen and paper.
Each exam costs 50 euro. DUO does not publish the real pass marks; its practice exams give a guide.
What the A2 exam looks like
People under the Wet inburgering 2013 (the older integration law) need A2 or higher. Under the Wet inburgering 2021 most people take B1 exams, but a municipality can switch someone on the B1 route to A2 per exam after at least 600 hours of lessons at an approved school. Naturalisation currently requires A2 as well.

Reading (lezen): sample questions
In DUO's practice exams you get about 10 short everyday texts, such as emails, letters, flyers and web pages, with 2 or 3 multiple choice questions each. The screen is split: text on one side, question on the other. Read the question first.
Sample 1: a message from the school
Tekst: “Beste ouders, volgende week vrijdag gaat groep 5 naar de dierentuin. De bus vertrekt om 8.30 uur bij school. Om 15.00 uur zijn we weer terug. Geef uw kind een lunchpakket en een fles water mee. De school betaalt de bus en de kaartjes. Met vriendelijke groet, juf Sanne”
Vraag: Wat moet uw kind meenemen?
- A. Geld voor de bus
- B. Eten en drinken
- C. Een kaartje voor de dierentuin
Answer: B. The text asks for a lunchpakket (packed lunch) and a bottle of water. A and C are wrong because the school pays for the bus and the tickets.
Sample 2: a notice in your building
Answer: B. The notice says to send an email before Monday. A is wrong (phone, Tuesday) and C has the wrong time.
Listening (luisteren): sample questions
The listening test mixes video clips, such as conversations or a short news item, with audio only, such as voicemail messages and announcements. Each fragment has 2 or 3 questions, shown on screen; the question and every answer option are also read aloud. Since you cannot hear our samples, we give the transcript.
Sample 3: a voicemail from the doctor
Transcript: “Goedemorgen, u spreekt met Fatima van huisartsenpraktijk De Brug. Dit bericht is voor meneer Haddad. U heeft morgen om tien uur een afspraak bij dokter Visser. Maar dokter Visser is morgen helaas niet aanwezig. U kunt wel donderdag om half twee komen. Is dat goed? Bel ons dan even terug. Dag!”
Vraag: Wanneer kan meneer Haddad naar dokter Visser?
- A. Morgen om tien uur
- B. Donderdag om half twee
- C. Donderdag om tien uur
Answer: B. Tomorrow at ten is cancelled; the new time is Thursday at half past one. Remember that “half twee” means 13.30, not 2.30.
Sample 4: an announcement at the station
Transcript: “Dames en heren, de trein naar Utrecht Centraal van 17.12 uur vertrekt vandaag niet van spoor 5, maar van spoor 8. De trein heeft ongeveer tien minuten vertraging. Onze excuses.”
Vraag 1: Wat is er vandaag anders?
- A. De trein vertrekt van een ander spoor.
- B. De trein rijdt vandaag niet.
- C. De trein vertrekt eerder.
Answer: A. The train leaves from platform 8 instead of 5. It still runs (not B) and it is late, not early (not C).
Vraag 2: Hoeveel minuten vertraging heeft de trein?
- A. Vijf minuten
- B. Tien minuten
- C. Twaalf minuten
Answer: B. The speaker says about ten minutes. The 5 and 12 (platform 5, 17.12) are distractors.
Speaking (spreken): sample prompts and model answers
You record 16 answers on the computer, with no examiner in the room. DUO's practice exams have 4 groups of 4: a person on video asks you something, you describe one picture, you choose between two pictures, and you describe three pictures, a set or a sequence. You have up to 60 seconds per answer.
Raters score each answer out of 12 with DUO's speaking rubric:
Aspect | Points |
|---|---|
Adequacy and comprehensibility | 0 to 3 |
Vocabulary | 0 to 2 |
Grammar | 0 to 2 |
Fluency | 0 to 2 |
Coherence | 0 to 1 |
Pronunciation | 0 to 2 |
If adequacy is 0, because your answer does not do what was asked, the whole answer scores 0.
Sample 5: a question on video
Situation: Your neighbour says: “Hoi! Ik ga volgende week op vakantie. Wil jij mijn planten water geven?”
Model answer: “Ja hoor, dat doe ik graag. Ik ben volgende week elke dag thuis, dus dat is geen probleem. Hoe vaak moeten de planten water krijgen? Geef me de sleutel maar. Fijne vakantie!”
Why it works: the first sentence answers the request (adequacy). A reason with “dus”, a question back and a natural ending help coherence, and short correct sentences protect grammar and fluency.
Sample 6: one picture
Situation: A woman stands at a bus stop in the rain, without an umbrella, looking at her watch. Vraag: “Wat is het probleem van deze vrouw?”
Model answer: “De vrouw staat bij de bushalte. Het regent en ze heeft geen paraplu. Ze kijkt op haar horloge, want de bus is te laat. Misschien komt ze te laat op haar werk. Ze is niet blij.”
Why it works: the question asks for the problem, and the answer names it: the bus is late and she is getting wet. Words like bushalte, paraplu and horloge earn vocabulary points.
Sample 7: two pictures, choose one
Situation: You want to do more sport. Picture 1 shows a gym, picture 2 a man running in a park. Vraag: “Wat kiest u? Waarom?”
Model answer: “Ik kies plaatje 2, hardlopen in het park. Dat is gratis, en de sportschool is duur. Ik ben ook graag buiten in de frisse lucht. Ik kan elke ochtend voor mijn werk een rondje lopen.”
Why it works: it names the picture right away, then gives two reasons. For the three-picture type, use eerst, dan and daarna to keep the order clear.
Writing (schrijven): sample email task
Writing is on paper, with a blue pen in an exam booklet. The practice exams have four tasks: a form, a short text for a neighbourhood newspaper, and two emails or letters covering 3 or 4 points each (in some papers one of them is a note based on pictures). Write in full sentences.
Emails are rated on adequacy (0 to 3), grammar (0 to 2), spelling (0 to 2), vocabulary (0 to 2) and coherence (0 to 1). Each task also defines what an acceptable answer must contain.
Sample 8: an email to your teacher
Opdracht: U bent ziek.
Amir
Why it works: all three points are there, which secures adequacy. The grammar is simple but varied: “want” with normal word order, the verb second after “Volgende week maandag”, and a polite “Wilt u” question. “Dan” links the last two sentences for coherence.
KNM: sample questions
KNM (Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij, knowledge of Dutch society) has 40 questions in 45 minutes, in a new version since 1 July 2025. Each question has a picture, is read aloud and has 3 options, usually about a named person. The 8 themes:
- History and geography
- Wonen (housing)
- Staatsinrichting en rechtsstaat (the state and the rule of law)
- Work and income
- Instanties (public bodies)
- Onderwijs en opvoeding (education and raising children)
- Omgangsvormen, waarden en normen (manners, values and norms)
- Health and health care
Sample 9: health and health care
Vraag: Sara heeft al twee weken pijn in haar rug. Het is geen spoed. Wat doet Sara eerst?
- A. Ze gaat naar het ziekenhuis.
- B. Ze maakt een afspraak bij de huisarts.
- C. Ze belt 112.
Answer: B. For a problem that is not urgent you go to your huisarts (GP) first. 112 is for emergencies.
Sample 10: housing
Vraag: Mehmet gaat verhuizen van Utrecht naar Zwolle. Waar geeft hij zijn nieuwe adres door?
- A. Bij de gemeente
- B. Bij de politie
- C. Bij de bibliotheek
Answer: A. When you move house within the Netherlands, you report your new address to the gemeente (municipality).
How to use these samples
- Time yourself. Record 60-second speaking answers on your phone and check that you answered the actual question.
- Write by hand. The writing exam is on paper, so practise with a pen.
- Then use the official material. DUO offers 15 free practice exams in the real exam software. They have no model answers, which is where samples like these help.

FAQ
DUO does not publish the pass mark of the real exam. Its free practice exams give a guide instead: the KNM practice exam counts as passed at 28 of 40, and the reading and listening practice exams show your chance of passing in bands (for reading, 17 to 22 correct is a reasonable chance and 23 or more a large one). Reading, listening and KNM are scored by computer; speaking and writing are rated by people.
