If you are applying for Spanish nationality by residence, there is a good chance a language exam stands between you and your application: the DELE A2, the Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera at level A2, issued by the Instituto Cervantes. Until now Mocko only covered French and English exams. As of this week, you can prepare for the DELE A2 on Mocko too.

Who needs the DELE A2?

Most adults applying for Spanish nationality by residence must prove basic Spanish with the DELE A2 or a higher DELE level, and pass the CCSE, a separate test on the Spanish constitution and society. Citizens of countries where Spanish is an official language are exempt from the language exam. The DELE A2 is also a widely recognised certificate in its own right, useful for work and study.

A2 is a basic level, but the exam is strict about format and time. Many candidates who speak everyday Spanish well still lose points because they do not know the tasks, run out of time in reading, or freeze in the speaking role-play.

What the DELE A2 looks like

The exam has four pruebas, each worth 25 points:

  • Comprensión de lectura (reading): 4 tareas, 25 questions, 60 minutes.
  • Comprensión auditiva (listening): 4 tareas, 25 questions, 40 minutes. Each recording is played twice.
  • Expresión e interacción escritas (writing): 2 tareas, 45 minutes.
  • Expresión e interacción orales (speaking): 3 tareas, 12 minutes, with 12 minutes of preparation: a short monologue, a photo description and a role-play with the examiner.

To pass (APTO) you need at least 30 out of 50 in each of two groups: reading plus writing, and listening plus speaking. A strong score in one group cannot make up for a weak one in the other, which is why it pays to know your weakest prueba early.

How DELE A2 practice works on Mocko

We built the DELE A2 on Mocko to feel like the real exam, in Spanish from start to finish:

  • Full mock exams in the official format: all four pruebas, the same tareas, question counts and timers.
  • Listening with native Spanish voices, recorded for each tarea.
  • Writing scored against the DELE criteria, with feedback on what cost you points.
  • Speaking with all three tareas, including the role-play: the examiner’s turns are recorded, so you answer in real time, just as you will on exam day.
  • A score report with your points for each prueba and whether the result would be APTO or NO APTO.

What is free

Every new account gets one free full DELE A2 mock exam, separate from the free mocks for our other exams, plus a free Speaking quick test, so you can try the part most candidates worry about. Three tips before you book

  1. Check the calendar early. The Instituto Cervantes runs a limited number of A2 sittings a year, and registration closes weeks before each one. Check the dates and deadlines on the official DELE website for your exam centre.
  2. Find your weakest group. Because each group needs 30 out of 50, a full mock tells you more than practising the prueba you already like.
  3. Rehearse the speaking role-play. It is short, but it is the task candidates most often find stressful. Practise asking and answering simple questions out loud until it feels routine.
