TCF Canada Expression Orale Topics

TCF Canada expression orale is twelve minutes with an examiner, split into three tasks that get progressively harder. Below are the tâche 2 role plays and tâche 3 opinion subjects reported from recent sittings, plus the tâche 3 questions that come back more than any others, ranked by how often candidates meet them.

Where these topics come from

The July 2026 lists come from candidates who sat the exam and wrote down what they were asked, including a full set from the 17 July 2026 session in Yaoundé. The ranked tâche 3 list is compiled from the frequency with which candidates report each subject across many sittings. Nobody can guarantee a specific question will reappear, but tâche 3 draws from a fairly small pool and the top ranked subjects come back constantly.

TCF Canada expression orale is scored from 0 to 20 and maps onto the CEFR and then the NCLC scale. NCLC 7, the usual Express Entry target, needs a score of 10, and NCLC 10 needs 16. Convert your score to CLB.

Tâche 1: Guided interview

Entretien dirigé
2 minutes, no preparation timeStandard questions for this task

Tâche 1 is deliberately formulaic. The examiner asks about you, and these are the questions almost every candidate gets in some combination.

  1. 1

    Bonjour, pouvez-vous vous présenter ?

    Hello, could you introduce yourself?

  2. 2

Parlez-moi de votre travail. En quoi consiste votre métier ?

Tell me about your job. What does your work involve?

  3. 3

What did you study, and why did you choose that field?

  4. 4

    Parlez-moi de votre famille.

    Tell me about your family.

  5. 5

Que faites-vous pendant votre temps libre ?

What do you do in your free time?

  6. 6

    Pourquoi apprenez-vous le français ?

    Why are you learning French?

  7. 7

What are your plans for the next few years?

  8. 8

Décrivez la ville où vous habitez.

Describe the city where you live.

How to answer tâche 1

  • Do not recite a memorised paragraph. The examiner interrupts with follow-up questions, and a scripted block collapses the moment they do.

  • Answer in two or three sentences, never one word. "Je suis ingénieur" is a wasted turn; add where, since when, and what you like about it.

  • Give the examiner hooks. Mention a hobby or a project you can talk about easily, and they will usually follow up on it, which puts you on ground you control.

  • Use the present, past and future in these two minutes. It is the cheapest way to show tense range before the harder tasks begin.

  • Two minutes is short. Do not spend ninety seconds on your name and birthplace.

Tâche 2: Role play, get information

Exercice en interaction
5 min 30, after 2 minutes of preparationReported by candidates

Reported from the 17 July 2026 TCF Canada session in Yaoundé. The examiner plays the role described and you ask the questions.

  1. 1

I am your friend. I have just joined the new sports centre in our town. You are interested and ask me about it: opening hours, prices, sports on offer, and so on.

  2. 2

I am your neighbour. I regularly go on cultural outings organised by the town hall. You are interested and ask me about them: places, dates, activities, and so on.

  3. 3

I am your neighbour. You have just moved into the building. You want information about the area: schools, leisure, shops, and so on, and you ask me questions.

  4. 4

I work at the desk of a car rental agency. You want to rent a car for your holiday. You ask me about the different offers: prices, vehicle types, insurance, and so on.

  5. 5

I work at the reception of a language school. You want to learn a new foreign language. You ask me for information: how courses are organised, the teachers, the fees, and so on.

How to answer tâche 2

  • Read the role carefully in your two minutes of prep, and note whether you are speaking to a friend or to a professional. That decides tu or vous for the whole task.

  • Write question words, not full sentences, on your prep sheet. You will speak more naturally from prompts than from a script.

  • Aim for eight to ten questions across the five and a half minutes, and vary the structure rather than repeating est-ce que every time.

  • The bracketed hints in the prompt are a free plan. Cover every item listed, then add two of your own to show initiative.

  • React to the answers. A short "Ah, c’est parfait" or "Ah bon, c’est plus cher que je pensais" turns an interrogation into a conversation, which is what the task is scored on.

  • Finish by summarising and committing: "Très bien, je vais passer demain pour m’inscrire, merci beaucoup."

In your view, what place do clothes hold in modern society?

How to answer tâche 3

  • You get thirty seconds. Do not plan content, plan structure: pick your side, note two arguments and one example each, and stop.

  • Announce your position in the first sentence. The examiner should never have to wonder what you think.

  • Two arguments developed properly beat five arguments listed. Each one needs a reason and then a concrete example, ideally from your own life.

  • Concede one point to the other side, then knock it down. "Certes, la voiture pollue, mais dans les zones rurales elle reste indispensable." This is the single clearest B2 marker in the task.

  • Use explicit connectors so the structure is audible: d’une part, d’autre part, en revanche, par conséquent, en définitive.

  • Save fifteen seconds for a real conclusion that restates your position. Running out of time mid-argument reads as a collapse.

  • It is an opinion, not a fact test. Invented statistics are unnecessary, and nobody checks whether your example is true.

Expressions to reuse

Learn these by heart. They buy you thinking time and signal the structure the examiner is listening for.

À mon avis, … / Selon moi, …

In my opinion, …

Je suis convaincu(e) que…

I am convinced that…

It seems to me that… for two main reasons.

D’une part… d’autre part…

On the one hand… on the other hand…

Admittedly, … but we must not forget that…

Prenons l’exemple de…

Let us take the example of…

C’est la raison pour laquelle…

That is the reason why…

En définitive, je dirais que…

All in all, I would say that…

How to prepare for TCF speaking

Tâche 3 draws from a small pool, so preparing the top ranked subjects genuinely pays. Do not memorise answers though: prepare arguments and examples you can recombine.

Most of these subjects reduce to a handful of themes: work, education, family, health, technology, environment and living abroad. Build two solid examples per theme and you can answer almost anything.

Watch the clock in tâche 3. Four and a half minutes feels much longer than candidates expect, and finishing at two minutes is a common way to lose marks.

In tâche 2 the examiner will not volunteer information. If you stop asking, the silence is yours, and silence is what costs the most.

Practise out loud with a timer. Reading these topics silently builds no fluency at all.

TCF speaking questions, answered

Are these the real TCF Canada speaking questions?

The tâche 2 and the last six tâche 3 subjects were reported by candidates who sat the 17 July 2026 session in Yaoundé, and the ranked tâche 3 list reflects how often candidates report each subject across many sittings. What we cannot promise is that any specific question will be on your paper. Treat this as the pool your subject will most likely be drawn from, not a leak.

How long is the TCF Canada speaking test?

Twelve minutes in total. Tâche 1 is a two minute guided interview with no preparation, tâche 2 is a five and a half minute role play with two minutes of preparation, and tâche 3 is a four and a half minute monologue with thirty seconds of preparation.

Does tâche 3 really repeat the same subjects?

Yes, far more than candidates expect. The pool is small enough that the highest ranked subjects, particularly the one about studies and career success, are reported constantly across centres and months. That is why preparing the top twenty is a realistic strategy for TCF in a way it would not be for an exam with an open topic list.

What score do I need for Express Entry?

TCF Canada speaking is scored from 0 to 20. NCLC 7, the usual Express Entry minimum, needs 10 points, NCLC 9 needs 14 and NCLC 10 needs 16. French speakers can also claim up to 50 additional CRS points for strong French.

Can I take notes during the preparation time?

Yes. You are given paper for the preparation time in tâche 2 and tâche 3. Use it for keywords and question words rather than full sentences, because reading aloud from notes sounds flat and stops you reacting to the examiner.

What happens if I disagree with the statement in tâche 3?

Nothing at all. There is no correct opinion, and examiners score structure, range and fluency, not the position you take. Pick whichever side you can argue more easily in French, even if it is not what you actually believe.
