Preparing for the SLE in French? This is a free SLE French Sample Test for October 2026: a practice paper for the Public Service Commission’s Second Language Evaluation, as a PDF you can print or work through on screen. The questions are in French, the instructions in English, and the answer keys and level tables are at the end.

What is inside this free SLE French practice test

The SLE has three separate tests. This sample covers all three in the official question formats, as a shorter practice paper than the 60 and 65 question supervised tests:

  • Reading comprehension: 40 questions, 60 minutes, short workplace texts, with a full answer key
  • Written expression: 40 questions, 55 minutes, fill in the blank and find the error, with a full answer key
  • Oral assessment: 11 questions climbing from level A to C, with preparation notes and what each level expects

How to use this SLE practice test

  1. Sit the reading and written expression tests on their own, each on the time shown at the top of the section.
  2. In the error questions, read the whole sentence first, then decide which bold section, if any, contains the error.
  3. Mark yourself against the answer key and read your raw score on the level table to see whether you land at A, B or C.
  4. Answer the oral questions out loud and record yourself. The higher questions ask you to explain, argue and speculate, and that is where level C is won or lost.

How SLE levels work

The SLE has no pass mark. Each test gives you a level, A, B or C (plus X below A, and E for an exemption from retesting). A bilingual position lists the levels it needs in the order reading, writing, oral, so a CBC profile means C in reading, B in writing and C in oral. You meet the profile test by test.
