6-Month TEF Study Plan For Intermediate Learners
Table of Contents
Getting ready for the TEF Canada or TEF Québec exam can feel tough, especially if you’re trying to move from level B1–B2 up to a strong B2–C1.
But with a clear, smart, and consistent study plan, there’s nothing that you can’t achieve. In this blog, we’ll give you a 6-month study plan perfect for intermediate learners.
It helps you build grammar, vocabulary, and exam strategies while improving all four skills: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. Let’s not waste any more time and review it:
Overall Study Structure
First, let’s look at an overview of the study plan. Instead of dividing it by months, we’ve broken it down into weeks so you’ll know exactly what to do each week, with clear details.
- Plan Duration: 26 weeks (~6 months)
- Weekly time investment: 10–15 hours/week
- Daily routine: 1–2 hours/day + 1 longer weekend session
- Rotation: Focus shifts every 2–3 weeks to build depth in each skill
Weeks | Main Focus | Secondary Skills |
1–4 | Reading (Compréhension écrite) | Vocabulary + Grammar |
5–9 | Listening (Compréhension orale) | Vocabulary + Note-taking |
10–15 | Writing (Expression écrite) | Grammar + Task 1 & 2 |
16–22 | Speaking (Expression orale) | Fluency + Task 1 & 2 |
23–26 | Mock exams + Weak point drill | All skills |
Month 1 – Foundations & Reading (Weeks 1–4)
In the first month, the goal is to reach solid TEF reading speed and accuracy. To do this, follow this daily routine:
- 30–40 min Anki vocab deck (~3000 words)
- 20 min grammar review (Bescherelle, Le Nouveau Français Authentique)
- 40–60 min reading TEF/TCF articles + past papers
As for resources, you can use these: PrepMyFuture TEF, TV5Monde “7 jours sur la planète,” Réussir le TEF (Didier)
In the first month, you should aim to complete 50-60 reading tests.
Month 2 – Listening Mastery (Weeks 5–9)
In the second month, you’ll be working on your TEF listening skills. The goal is to understand radio, interviews, and fast debates at the end of this month. To reach this point, follow this daily plan:
- 2 × 20‑min listening sessions (RFI Journal en français facile → normal speed)
- 1 full TEF listening test every 3 days
- Shadowing 5–10 min/day
If you don’t know where to practice your listening skills, Radio‑Canada “Le 15‑18,” InnerFrench, and Français Authentique podcasts are good resources.
This month, you should complete 40+ listening tests.
Months 3–4 – Writing (Weeks 10–15)
As you can probably guess, in the next 2 months, we’ll try to improve your next skill, which is TEF writing. The goal is to master both of your writing tasks, which are:
- Task 1: Article/email (120–150 words)
- Task 2: Opinion article (200–250 words)
To do so, follow this weekly plan:
- 3 full writing tests (Tue/Thu/Sun)
- Corrections via tutor or PrepMyFuture auto‑correction
- Build templates for common topics (santé, environnement, travail, immigration)
As for resources, you can use: Production écrite DELF B2 (CLE International), PrepMyFuture correction module
In these 2 months, you should complete 30–40 corrected writings.
Months 4–5 – Speaking (Weeks 16–22)
Last but not least, it’s time to improve your TEF speaking skills, which some people consider the hardest part of the test. In these 2 months, the goal is to speak fluently for 10-12 minutes to prepare for TEF oral expression tasks, which are:
- Task 1 (2 min): parler de soi / expérience
- Task 2 (5 min): convaincre un ami / débattre
To get ready, follow this weekly routine:
- Record yourself 4–5 times/week
- 1–2 italki lessons focused on TEF oral
- Practice with partners (HelloTalk, Tandem)
If you don’t know where to practice your speaking skills, here are some good sources: Français avec Pierre TEF oral videos, Objectif Express 2, Réussir le TEF.
In these 2 months, the goal is to reach 50+ recorded speaking tasks.
Month 6 – Intensive Mock Exams (Weeks 23–26)
Lastly, to get you ready for the whole test, it’s time to simulate real mock exams to get you ready for the test day.
In weeks 23-25, you should take 2 full official mock exams per week. Also, analyze every mistake and drill weak skills.
As for resources, you can take your mock exams on authorized platforms like mocko.ai, because:
- includes all TEF sections: Speaking, Writing, Listening, Reading
- Provides realistic speaking practice with audio and timed recording
- Offers official‑style reading and writing tasks
- Uses an exam‑like interface with real instructions and input fields
- Features adaptive difficulty, with questions that get harder as you go
Finally, in week 26, have a full review of your overall performance, rest, and get ready for the real test.
Final Thoughts
TEF might sound scary, but there’s nothing that a smart and consistent study plan can’t beat! By following this 6‑month plan, you’ll gradually strengthen each skill, including reading, listening, writing, and speaking.
With steady effort of 10–15 hours per week, most learners reach B2 across all sections, and some might even achieve C1 in one or two skills. So stay disciplined, and hopefully you’ll get a great score!
